A La Colonia activist and a social worker have been appointed by the City Council to Oxnard’s Commission on Community Relations.

Vicky Gonzales and Deshay D. Ford are to take their seats next month. They will serve for three-year terms on a committee that seeks to foster improved relationships between different ethnic, racial and religious groups. In recent years, the commission has hosted events such as the city’s Multicultural Festival to promote its goals.

Gonzales an anti-crime activist, has headed numerous community groups, including the La Colonia Neighborhood Council and the Coalition for Community Development Inc., which fights alcohol abuse. Most recently, Gonzales led a protest against two neighborhood bars that allegedly employed “B girls” to push drinks on men. The bars’ liquor licenses were suspended.
