Kids Can Saddle Up for a Little Horseplay

Trying to stop children from horsing around over the holidays? Why not send them to the Holiday Horse Camp at Rio Vista Stables?

About a year ago, Sherry and Randy Malis of Mission Viejo began operating the camp for elementary school-age children, using their 15 horses kept at the stables.

Under the name Double R Stables, the Malises also developed a volunteer program for older children. Kid Connectors is geared for youth in grades seven through 12. The volunteers work at the stables and help the younger children in exchange for lessons and other activities.

“The whole mission of our program is to bring horses to kids and kids to horses,” said Sherry Malis, 48.

There are about 30 volunteers, but more are needed, she said.

The three-day camp, held Sunday through Tuesday, will take place at Rio Vista Stables, 31053 Avenida de la Vista. Children in grades one through six pay $125, or $100 per child for families enrolling two or more siblings. Information: (714) 302-6691.
