Airport Travelers Warned About Fraudulent Solicitations
The holiday season is prime time for solicitors at Los Angeles International Airport, which has tried to ban such activities.
However, the efforts of the city-owned facility were thwarted when a federal court ruling this year blocked an ordinance outlawing people from seeking donations.
Because the ordinance is on hold, Councilwoman Ruth Galanter, whose district includes the airport, is trying to figure out a way to uncover fraudulent solicitors whose funds do not go to the charities they say they represent.
At the request of Galanter, the City Council has adopted a proposal that would give the city attorney 30 days to figure out how to identify fraudulent solicitors at LAX and other city-owned facilities.
Meanwhile, Galanter is urging all holiday travelers at LAX to give only to those charities they know are legitimate.
