The Sylmar Woman’s Club awarded scholarships totaling $9,000 to area students who intend to continue their educational careers at vocational schools, community colleges and four-year institutions.

The scholarships--awarded in grants of $400, $500 and $1,000--will be applied directly to tuition, said Sharon DeMetz, the club’s first vice president.

Students were awarded scholarships based on their academic performance, Sylmar residency and the cost of continuing their education, DeMetz said.

Recipients were recommended to the club’s scholarship committee by Sylmar High guidance counselors and Mission College counselors.

“Some of these boys and girls come from such difficult circumstances and excel in so many ways,” DeMetz said, adding that the club wanted to show its support.

Nam Tran, a 1997 graduate of Sylmar High School, won the club’s largest scholarship award of $1,000, which was given in conjunction with Allied Signal Ocean Systems of Sylmar, DeMetz said. Ana Ulloa, valedictorian of the Sylmar High Math, Science and Technology Magnet, also received a scholarship.

Other recipients include Viviana Nunez, Olga Reyes, Rosanna Rodriguez, Sandra Bernal, Jessica Rodriguez, Sandra Salcido, Veronica Samano, Abraham Aguilar, Lorena Barreda, Georgia Estrada, Erick Garcia and Isabelle Maggio.
