Housing Project for Seniors Will Receive Public Hearing
The City Council will hold a public hearing Monday on a proposal to build a seniors housing project.
The proposal calls for an 85-unit, assisted-living complex on the southwest corner of La Paz Road and Country Club Drive. The project, to be built on a 2.77-acre site, is backed by the city planning staff.
“It does provide a need because we have only one similar facility in Mission Viejo,” said Community Development Director Clint Sherrod. “It’s also in a good location and will be a very low traffic generator.”
Assisted-living housing provides a limited amount of staff help for residents. There will also be an area in the housing complex set aside for the care of Alzheimer’s patients.
The council will be asked to approve a zoning change for the project site.
In March, the council approved the city’s first affordable housing project for the elderly--a 143-unit apartment complex across the street from the site proposed for the assisted-living housing project.
“I think it will be a wonderful addition to Mission Viejo and create a niche of senior housing for our citizens,” said Mayor William S. Craycraft.
After Monday’s hearing, the council will meet next on Aug. 18. The council takes an annual monthlong break during the summer.
The meeting will be held at City Hall, 25909 Pala, at 6 p.m. Information: (714) 470-3000.
