Bridge Collapse Kills 2 Workers; 3 Others Injured
A closed section of a bridge on Interstate 64 collapsed Wednesday as it was being repaired, killing two workers and injuring three others.
A steel beam being replaced on the bridge along the Big Sandy River collapsed, falling 100 feet onto a crane, said Jim Perry of the Coast Guard office in Huntington. One of the dead workers was pinned underneath the wreckage. Divers found the other body in the river.
Witnesses said four workers were on the bridge when it collapsed. Three were taken to a hospital with broken bones. Their conditions were not immediately known.
C.J. Mahan Construction Co. of Columbus, Ohio, began work on the project in March. President Jeff Mahan said he did not know what caused the collapse.
The accident happened in the eastbound lanes. Traffic, which had already been rerouted because of the construction, continued in the westbound lanes.
