Diaz Arce Goal Lifts United

Raul Diaz Arce, in his return to Major League Soccer after a monthlong stint with the El Salvador national team, scored in the 74th minute Friday night to give Washington D.C. United a 3-2 victory against the Burn before 16,089 at Dallas.

The D.C. United forward took John Maessner’s pass and dribbled to the top of the 18-yard box before unleashing a sizzling shot past Burn goalkeeper Mark Dodd.

Washington improved to 12-4; Dallas fell to 8-9.

Kansas City 2, Columbus 1--Digital Takawira scored in the 37th minute and again in the 70th for the Wizards in a game that featured four yellow cards and the ejections of both goalies and Kansas City Coach Ron Newman.

The Wizards (12-5) remained atop the Western Conference and improved to 19-0 when they score first, including 8-0 this season. The Crew, fourth in the Eastern Conference, fell to 7-9 before a hometown throng of 16,743, and has yet to score in the first half this season.

Tampa Bay 1, New York-New Jersey 0--Roy Lassiter scored in the 37th minute before 18,070 at Tampa Bay.

Tampa Bay (9-8) dominated possession but was unable to penetrate the MetroStars’ back four, taking 10 shots in the first half before one finally found its way past goalie Tony Meola.

With leading scorer Giovanni Savarese fulfilling an obligation to the Venezuelan national team, the MetroStars (5-11) had difficulty finding outlets for offense.

Colorado 3, San Jose 1--Paul Bravo scored two goals in 10 minutes for the Rapids before 36,252 at Denver.

The Rapids (9-9) broke a 1-1 tie as Bravo finished a pair of long crossing passes, the first in the 58th minute from Matt Kmoski and the second 10 minutes later from David Patino.

The Clash (6-11) took an early 1-0 lead when Ronald Cerritos lightly tapped the ball with his head into the net.
