GTE to Enter City’s Cable Service Market

Share

Port Hueneme has become the latest Ventura County city to welcome cable television competition.

The City Council last week approved a franchise agreement that allows GTE Media Ventures Inc. to offer cable television and other telecommunications services to the coastal community’s 22,000 residents.

The approval means cable television customers could soon have an alternative to Jones Intercable Inc. and raises the potential for lower rates.

GTE has already secured similar agreements with other cities, including Thousand Oaks and Camarillo.

The company is using Ventura County as a test market for a pilot cable system, which is expected to eventually provide as many as 150 television channels with better sound and resolution than presently available.

GTE expects to have its Port Hueneme system up and running within 10 months, said Doug Breeze, public works director.
