Area Man to Head City Street Bureau

The Los Angeles City Council Tuesday confirmed Mayor Richard Riordan’s appointment of Gregory Scott as director of the Bureau of Street Maintenance.

Scott, a resident of Granada Hills, has spent his entire 28-year career with the agency. He had been the bureau’s interim head since Patrick Howard left in January and a nationwide search for his successor was conducted.

“Gregory possesses the leadership, managerial skills and dedication to successfully lead the Bureau of Street Maintenance into the 21st century,” Riordan said in June when he selected Scott for the post.

On Tuesday, the council approved Scott’s appointment by a unanimous 10-0 vote.

With an annual budget exceeding $133 million, the Bureau of Street Maintenance is responsible for repairing and maintaining the city’s street infrastructure.

Scott began working at the bureau, which is part of the Department of Public Works, in 1969 as a field engineering aide. In 1994, he was promoted to assistant director to manage the street maintenance, lot cleaning and technical services divisions, a position that put him in charge of more than 75% of the bureau’s 1,160 employees.

Scott has a master’s degree in public administration and a bachelor’s degree in economic geography from Cal State Northridge, where he is president of the Master of Public Administration Alumni Assn. He attended Granada Hills High School.
