Carnival rides, games, homemade food and an extensive lineup of musical performers will be part of the 71st annual San Fernando Fiesta today and Sunday at San Fernando Recreation Park.

Organizers are expecting between 30,000 and 40,000 people at the free two-day event, which is the largest of its kind in the northeast Valley.

As has been the custom in recent years, musical performances will be the highlight of the fiesta, said Bruce Cohen, president of the San Fernando Chamber of Commerce.

“There will be a wide variety of music, including mariachi, Banda and pop,” Cohen said. “The performers are both major recording artists and some equally talented local bands.”

Food and games booths will be operated by local nonprofit agencies, he said.

Today’s performances will include El Chapo de Sinaloa, Luis y Su Sufia Nortena, Los Angeles del Norte, Los Silverados, Barrio Latino and Expresion Nortena.

On Sunday, the festival audience will hear Banda Novillos, Los Amables del Norte, Toros Band, Brenda y las Mitoteras, Banda Canelo, Banda los Lagos and Chelo.

The primary fiesta sponsor is the San Fernando Civic Assn. Other sponsors include the city of San Fernando, Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Edison International and radio stations KKHJ 930-AM and KBUE 105.5-FM.

Admission is free, but there is a charge for carnival rides.

The fiesta will run from noon to 8 p.m. today and Sunday at the park, 208 Park Ave., in San Fernando.
