An Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet crashed Friday into swampy woods in eastern North Carolina, but the two-man crew ejected safely, the Air Force said.

The aircraft, from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, went down during a training exercise on the Dare County Range.

“It doesn’t look like it hit anything,” said an Air Force spokesman at the Pentagon, Maj. Wes Davis. “The crew apparently only had superficial injuries.”

The crew members were picked up by a Coast Guard helicopter and taken to Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, N.C., said Sgt. Joe Kubistek at Seymour Johnson.

They were treated and released, according to hospital spokeswoman Bonnie McCrodden. Their names were not disclosed.

No immediate cause was cited for the crash.
