A Record-Setting Transpac Nears End
Betty Sue Sherman of Long Beach sailed Bay Wolf, a Santa Cruz 50 ultralight, past Diamond Head early Saturday to complete the Transpacific Yacht Race from Long Beach to Honolulu in 9 days 19 hours 24 minutes 3 seconds.
Ralphie, a similar boat skippered by Jerry Montgomery of Long Beach, finished 14 1/2 hours earlier and edged the record-setting Medicine Man by 30:20 on a corrected handicap time in Division III.
The fastest boats--the maxi turbo-sleds that started behind the slower boats--led by Roy Disney’s Pyewacket were expected to finish overnight and today and several were on a record-setting pace.
