City Plans to Bury Sunflower Power Lines

Share

The city plans to bury utility lines on Sunflower Avenue between Harbor Boulevard and Fairview Road, officials said.

Three property owners in the area--C.J. Segerstrom & Sons, Times Mirror Co. and the Automobile Club of Southern California--plan to pay for the $2.3- million project, said Ernesto Munoz, the assistant city engineer.

Taking the lines underground “will aesthetically enhance the area and will prevent future overhead utility lines,” Munoz said. “The public will be served.”

Work is expected to start in October and end in May, officials said.

The City Council approved an assessment district for the area and agreed never to build above-ground utility lines on Sunflower.

The south side of the street, nearer the San Diego Freeway, belongs to Costa Mesa. The north side is in Santa Ana.

Southern California Edison owns the power lines. The project is not expected to disrupt electrical service, officials said.

Sunflower also is poised for other improvements, including street widening and pothole repair, officials said.
