General Motors Corp. said the Internal Revenue Service granted tax-free status to the proposed spinoff of its Los Angeles-based Hughes Electronics defense unit, eliminating a possible barrier to the transaction. GM said in January that it would spin off the business to shareholders and then sell it to Raytheon Co. for $9.5 billion.
