VA Hospital to Lay Off 29 Doctors and 35 Nurses

Share

Officials at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Los Angeles today will notify 29 physicians and about 35 members of the nursing staff that they will lose their jobs by the end of August, hospital officials said.

The doctors--about half of whom are part-time employees--represent about 10% of the physicians on the staff, said Dave Bayard, hospital spokesman.

The layoffs reflect cost-cutting measures in Veterans Administration hospitals across the country, Bayard said.

Fewer physicians are needed, he said, because patient stays are being shortened and the hospital is doing more outpatient surgery.

Other hospital employees will also lose their jobs. But Bayard said he did not know the exact number of staff members who will be laid off.
