Sinbad, ‘Bert Fershners’ and ‘Rough Riders’ on Schedule

There are several new specials airing this weekend, running the gamut from documentaries to a ‘70s musical flashback.

The Learning Channel’s “TWA Flight 800,” tonight at 7 and 10, offers a comprehensive look at the explosion and crash of the Boeing 747 a year ago today off the coast of Long Island and the continuing investigation.

A&E;’s “Investigative Reports: Untying the Straitjacket,” Saturday at 6 and 10 p.m., travels inside two of the country’s highest-security mental hospitals.

The popular comic Sinbad headlines his fourth HBO comedy special, “Sinbad: Nothin’ but the Funk,” Saturday at 10 p.m. He returns Sunday to HBO with his music special, “Sinbad’s Summer Jam 3: ‘70s Soul Music Festival,” at 9 p.m. The BarKays, Cameo, George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars and the Isley Brothers are among the guests.

Comedy Central offers “Bert Fershners,” Saturday at 11 p.m., a sketch comedy-concert starring a seven-member New York troupe.

The HBO documentary “Hookers at the Point: Goin’ Out Again,” Saturday at 11 p.m., is a follow-up to last year’s “America Undercover” documentary on prostitution. It visits a Bronx neighborhood overrun with drugs, crime and streetwalkers.

The History Channel’s “Crimes in Time,” Sunday at 6 and 10 p.m., features four crimes that tell the story of the era, including a man who stole the “Mona Lisa” in 1911 for revenge, and Butch Cassidy and the Hole in the Wall Gang.

Friday

HBO’s “World Championship Boxing,” at 6 p.m., features Danny Romero and Johnny Tapia battling for the junior-bantamweight title. Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and George Foreman will be at ringside in Las Vegas.

The Cartoon Network’s quirky animated talk show, “Space Ghost,” returns at 8 p.m. with a new season of 24 episodes. Among the Ghost’s guests are Beck, Charlton Heston, Peter Fonda, Mark Hamill and Jon Stewart.

C. Thomas Howell and Matt Frewer star in the Sci-Fi Channel thriller “Dead Fire,” at 6 p.m.

Barry Bostwick stars in the Movie Channel’s “I Worship His Shadow,” at 9 p.m., the first of four sci-fi films following a trio of misfits who have stolen the most destructive weapon on the planet.

Sunday

Tom Berenger is Teddy Roosevelt in John Milius’ four-hour historical drama “Rough Riders,” at 5, 7 and 9 p.m. on TNT. The conclusion will be shown Monday at the same times.

Billy Crystal is the latest guest on Bravo’s “Inside the Actors Studio,” at 6 p.m.

Directors Tony and Ridley Scott are executive producers of Showtime’s new erotic anthology series “The Hunger,” premiering at 9 p.m. The show is based on short stories of the forbidden and bizarre; Terence Stamp hosts.

Fox’s “Goosebumps” goes prime time with “Night of the Living Dummy III,” 7 p.m. on Channel 11.
