Red Cross Offers Children Emergency-Skills Classes

The Orange County chapter of the American Red Cross is offering two safety classes this weekend at which children can learn emergency first-aid skills and earn baby-sitting certificates.

The courses will provide children with skills to save lives and earn extra money, Red Cross officials said.

“One of our priorities is to make sure that children in our community know what to do in an emergency,” said Robert Wenzel, chairman of the Orange County chapter. “We also want them to have a chance to be productive and earn money in their spare time in a responsible way.”

The baby-sitting course will be Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to children 11 to 15 years old. The course will cover lining up baby-sitting jobs, caring for infants, discipline and problem solving.

Participants will be issued a 90-page baby-sitting manual and a Red Cross certificate and pin.

The course titled First-Aid for Kids will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon for those 8 to 12 years old. The class will cover safety information, first-aid procedures for bleeding, poisoning, burns and other emergencies.

Each participant will receive a first aid certificate.

Registration fees are $40 for the baby-sitting course and $15 for the first aid class, or $50 for both. The classes will be at the Red Cross office at 601 N. Golden Drive, Santa Ana.
