Hearing Date Set in Embezzlement Case
A preliminary hearing has been set for a former bookkeeper at the Hermosa Beach Comedy & Magic Club who is charged with embezzling more than $150,000 in club receipts.
Margaret Michelle Wood, 28, has pleaded not guilty to 11 counts of check forgery and one count of grand theft by embezzlement. On Tuesday, an Aug. 26 preliminary hearing date was set in South Bay Municipal Court.
Wood was arrested in March after being accused of embezzling the funds during a one-year period in a scheme that took advantage of the fact that club owner Michael Lacey, who is dyslexic, had difficulty reading.
Wood is free on $20,000 bail, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Bryant Bushling.
