Two Oxnard men were arrested Friday after they allegedly stole a man’s car after brandishing a gun and a knife, police said.

Victor Aguiar, 24, and his brother, Gabriel, 18, are each charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon and car theft following the 2:30 p.m. incident, Sgt. Scott Whitney said.

He said Tony Briones, 24, was working on his car in the garage of his home in the 5100 block of Saviers Road when the suspects, whom he knew, approached him.

Amid a heated exchange of words, Victor allegedly pulled out a gun and Gabriel a knife, Whitney said.

Following a short struggle, Briones broke free and ran for safety while a relative called police from inside the house, Whitney said.

No shots were fired and no one was injured, he said.

The suspects allegedly drove off in Briones’ 1980 Cadillac El Dorado, abandoning it at the corner of Canterbury and Campbell ways, a few blocks from Briones’ home, Whitney said.

Based on a description of the suspects, police arrested Victor Aguiar at about 3 p.m. after seeing him run into a nearby house, possibly occupied by a relative, Whitney said.

Gabriel Aguiar was arrested at his Oxnard workplace at about 5 p.m., according to Whitney. The suspects were being held on $100,000 bail each and are set to be arraigned in Ventura Superior Court on Tuesday, he said.
