Pier to Close at Night Until Lights Are Repaired

Lighting on the Hermosa Beach Pier has deteriorated so badly that the city has decided to close down the pier at night until renovations, scheduled to begin this fall, are completed.
City officials recently began closing the pier one hour after sunset to prevent fishermen and pedestrians on moonlight strolls from walking onto the pier after dark, said City Manager Steve Burrell. City officials are concerned that poor lighting has made the pier unsafe at night.
During the $4.5-million pier overhaul, to be undertaken with local and county funds, the entire lighting system is due to be replaced. Eight of the 22 light poles are considered beyond repair.
The overhaul is expected to take about 10 months.
