A parolee broke into a home Tuesday night as SWAT officers surrounded the house and the family fled.

Police said the man had escaped from a hotel room at 9:21 p.m. as he somehow learned that police, armed with a warrant, were about to arrest him on suspicion of making methamphetamine and having a stolen car, Lt. Dave Petko said.

The man, who was not identified, ran from 2600 N. Main Street to 2300 N. Riverside Drive, police said, a distance of only a quarter of a mile. But police said he somehow had to cross under the Santa Ana Freeway, possibly through tunnels.

The parolee broke into the back of a house, as the terrified family ran out the front. The SWAT team surrounded the house and evacuated adjacent homes after the family told police that guns were hidden inside.

The parolee threw his own gun down at some point during the chase.

At the house, he was negotiating with police for awhile, but by 11:30 p.m. he had stopped.
