Cordero Not Ready to Plea-Bargain

Wilfredo Cordero of the Boston Red Sox will not agree to a plea bargain that would jail him on charges he bloodied his wife’s nose and violated a restraining order, his attorney, Kevin Burke, said Thursday in Cambridge, Mass.

Prosecutor Anne Edwards said after the pretrial hearing Thursday there had not yet been talk of a plea bargain, and she said it’s too early to tell whether she will seek jail time.

Cordero has been free on bail since the June 11 fight with Ana Cordero. He pleaded innocent to charges of assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and threatening to commit a crime.

The charge of making a threat carries a six-month maximum sentence, and the other three charges have maximum sentences of 2 1/2 years.

Judge Arthur Sherman delayed the case until Aug. 18.

Milwaukee added pitcher Doug Jones to the disabled list, joining four other Brewers already on the list.

Jones, 40, has a back strain and has not played since July 15. He went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 16.

Others on the disabled list are outfielder Marc Newfield (shoulder), pitcher Ben McDonald (shoulder), infielder John Jaha (shoulder surgery) and pitcher Steve Sparks (surgery).

The Toronto Blue Jays claimed left-handed pitcher Omar Daal on waivers from the Montreal Expos. Daal, 25, appeared in 33 games in relief for the Expos this season and was 1-2 with one save and a 9.79 earned-run average.
