Thousand Oaks and a group working to oust City Councilwoman Elois Zeanah were ordered to pay more than $53,000 in legal fees stemming from a court battle earlier this year (B1). . . . Zeanah and plaintiff Thomas Humphreys applauded the action, but Jill Lederer of the recall group downplayed the ruling’s importance. “No amount of lawsuits is going to make this recall go away.”

A little more than a year after he died in the fiery crash of TWA Flight 800, Brent Richey was laid to rest in Ventura (B1). Richey, who had been on his way to Europe to get married, was buried next to his fiancee. . . . About two dozen family members and friends turned out for a graveside service in which grief mixed with relief. “Today, we can put to closure, each of us in our own way, what was started a year ago,” said the Rev. Mark Steele of the Ventura Missionary Church.

Still Standing

About 150 homeless veterans showed up Friday for the first day of the annual Stand Down, a weekend program designed to hook the vets up with aid ranging from job leads to food to medical care (B1). Among the participants was Don Younger of Santa Barbara, above. . . . Coordinators say they don’t mind if the vets choose to do more socializing than self-improvement. “Whatever they get out of it is OK,” says event co-chairwoman Sharon Dwyer.

Next Step

The latest phase of jury selection in the Diana Haun murder trial has ended, with 90 candidates held over for further questioning next week (B1). . . . The jurors, who will come from Santa Barbara County, have been questioned extensively on their feelings about the death penalty.
