Whose Side to Take in NFL vs. Los Angeles?

Share

Tell Randy Harvey [July 22] we don’t need the NFL tinhorns, they need us. Without us, they’re nothing but bush league, small-time carny, hustling the rubes out of a few dollars.

Let them put a team here, build a new stadium, give a generous endowment to our schools, libraries, police and fire departments--in short, earn their keep, for the privilege of doing business in the world’s greatest market.

In fact, let them pay a personal site license fee before they have the right to break ground on the new stadium.

It’s time for Angelenos to stop behaving like downtrodden serfs and show Mr. Tagliabue’s Chihuahuas who the baddest dog in the pack really is.

Everybody in L.A. (the mayor, city council, board of supervisors, Sports and Entertainment Commission) supports the New Coliseum as the place for the NFL to resume playing in Los Angeles. Everybody, that is, except The Times--Plaschke, Simers, Dwyre and now Harvey.

What is the problem over there at The Times, can’t you guys do the math? South Park and Hollywood Park are privately owned properties, owned by people trying to make a profit. The Coliseum is a state facility that just has to cover its expenses. Who supports either of these private facilities besides The Times?

C’mon, guys, give it up. The expansion team, USC and hopefully UCLA will all be playing in the New Coliseum. We’ll save you a couple of seats in the press box.
