ETHICAL CHILDREN: The author of “Children of Character” will offer common-sense advice to parents on how to teach their children ethics through example and instruction. LIBRARY DAYS: It’s not too late to take part in most public libraries’ summer reading programs, which offer awards and incentives to children who keep up with their reading. Stop by your local branch for details.

LEADERSHIP CAMP: The Orange County Human Relations Council is accepting applications from 11- to 14-year-old students to attend its annual Junior Youth Leadership Camp, held Aug. 4-8 at Brookhurst Junior High in Anaheim. Student workshops discuss race, conflict resolution, gender issues, public speaking and teamwork. There are also arts, crafts and entertainment activities. The program accepts 100 students. READING WORKSHOPS: Classes designed to improve student reading techniques and skills start this week. They are offered by Orange Coast College for children from kindergarten through 11th grade. Sessions meet weekly through late August and are divided into five groups according to grade level. The course costs $199 plus a $12 materials fee and is at Corona del Mar High School, 2101 Eastbluff Drive, Newport Beach. (714) 432-5880.
