An arson fire that scorched foothills near Yosemite National Park, destroying several vacation homes and other structures, was contained Sunday, officials said.

Eight mobile homes and one small cabin were gutted by the 500-acre blaze, which burned in a sparsely populated area near the California town of Groveland just outside Yosemite.

Six outbuildings, two travel trailers and two boats were also destroyed. One firefighter suffered minor injuries from a falling tree.

“As the weather cooled off [Saturday night] and as the humidity went up, we were able to get in there, giving firefighters the upper hand,” California Department of Forestry spokeswoman Kary Hubbard said.

Water-carrying airplanes and helicopters helped firefighters battle the blaze, which started Saturday as two separate fires that burned together. At this rate, the fire could be put out by tonight, Hubbard said.
