A 42-year-old man who apparently did not hear a Metrolink train approaching from behind was struck and killed Tuesday, according to authorities.

The man’s identity was being withheld pending notification of relatives, said Sgt. Charles Swanson of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division.

The accident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. in the 15300 block of San Fernando Road in a nonresidential area adjacent to the San Fernando Juvenile Hall, said Bob Collis, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The man was walking southbound on the tracks as the train approached from behind, Swanson said. But he apparently did not hear the train and was struck.

The train was carrying passengers but no one inside was injured, authorities said.

Metrolink trains are known to be quieter than freight trains, according to Swanson, and that could be the reason the man did not hear it approaching.

The accident did not appear to be a suicide and police do not suspect foul play.

“There are no indications other than it was just a traffic accident,” Swanson said.
