Dinneen Hired to Coach Concordia Women’s Basketball

Greg Dinneen has been hired as women’s basketball coach at Concordia University, Assistant Athletic Director Jody Wise announced.

Dineen, who had been an assistant women’s coach at Pepperdine from 1988-96, replaces Dave Walter. Walter compiled a 70-26 record in three seasons, leading Concordia to the Golden State Athletic Conference title in 1996-97. Walter resigned to teach at Christ School in Asheville, N.C.

Dinneen, who graduated from Cal State Fullerton, was head coach of the Whittier College women’s team from 1986-88. He also serves as an assistant coach at University High for his brother, Mike Dinneen, who is the Trojan boys’ basketball coach.

Jamie Wilkes, a softball pitcher for Cypress College, has signed to attend Utah, a Cypress official said.

Last season, Wilkes, then a sophomore, helped Cypress win the state championship. Cypress defeated Sacramento City, 5-0, in the title game. Wilkes set a single-season college record for victories, finishing 39-4. She gave up only 196 hits in 265 innings, and had an 0.87 earned-run average.

Wilkes, who was named the 1997 Southern California pitcher of the year, also holds the Cypress record for career victories (65).

Rene Cano has been hired to coach girls’ soccer at Irvine High, Athletic Director Rick Curtis announced.

Cano, who worked with the San Clemente High program the past three years, replaces Kevin Grimes, who took the men’s assistant soccer position at Southern Methodist.

Cano, who also has worked with the Southern California Cosmos under-18 club team, is a graduate of La Quinta High and Irvine Valley College’s fitness specialist program.

Curtis also announced the resignation of Shawn Patchell, girls’ basketball coach at Irvine.
