Pregnancy Prevention Drive Targets Cambodian Youths
The United Cambodian Community of Long Beach has launched an innovative teenage pregnancy prevention campaign that features soap opera-style educational videos.
“Almost every day a teenager in the Cambodian community becomes a parent,” said Kerry Causey, the project’s director.
Three dramatic half-hour videos, six public service announcements on Cambodian cable television and community meetings will stress avoiding early sexual intimacy.
Management consultant Alan Woo said reducing teenage pregnancy is critical if more members of the Cambodian community are to escape poverty and public assistance. “This educational campaign is the first shot at self-sufficiency,” Woo said.
The 29-month educational campaign is being funded by a $655,000 grant from the California Department of Health Services.
