Panel Holds Final Hearing on Proposed School District

More than 200 parents and residents attended a raucous public hearing in Paramount on a proposed new school district in Lakewood that would be carved out of the ABC, Bellflower, Paramount and Long Beach districts.

Todd Rogers, chairman of the committee supporting the creation of the new district, said community identity is the driving force behind the move.

The meeting was the final public hearing conducted by the Los Angeles County Committee on School District Organization that will decide whether to recommend that a new 22-campus district be formed.

Just under 200 Lakewood students currently attend Paramount schools even though about 1,000 live in the district, said Rogers.

“The Paramount district has significant problems with student performance and campus security,” said Rogers. “People have already seceded.”
