Fullback Iacenda Out for the Season

Share

Sophomore fullback Ted Iacenda will sit out the rest of the season because he needs arthroscopic procedures on both shoulders and might require reconstructive surgery on both.

“It’s real disappointing,” said Iacenda, who started in four games ahead of senior Rodney Sermons before being injured. “I just want to do what’s best to get healthy for next spring.”

Iacenda is scheduled for arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder next week to determine whether he needs reconstructive surgery. He wants to delay the process on his right shoulder until he has completed the academic semester.

Recovery after reconstructive surgery would be expected to take three to four months.

Tailback Delon Washington will get the start against Stanford, Coach John Robinson said, though converted safety Chad Morton is expected to get a lot of action with Malaefou MacKenzie and LaVale Woods out until at least next week because of injuries.

Morton hadn’t practiced at tailback since last season but has looked good in practice this week as he learns the plays.

USC’s other defensive back who moonlights on offense, Daylon McCutcheon, might get up to 15 plays on offense after a season-high 10-12 against Washington, when he caught two passes for 30 yards.

Receiver R. Jay Soward returned to practice after missing a day because of flu, but tackle Phalen Pounds remained out. . . . Linebacker-safety David Gibson, a defensive standout the last few games, didn’t practice because of a sprained ankle but is expected to play.
