Dress Code Feelings Bared

* Re “District Dress Code Back in Fashion in O.C.” on Oct. 29:

As a student who wears plain old clothing and has never been stopped for my clothes by school administrators, I am divided over this issue.

The dress code is something I do not really care about because it does not affect me, but some of my peers are against it. I stand by them for expressing their beliefs and thoughts. Individuality of people is very important and makes living each day seem unique because everyone is different. Variety is the spice of life!

But I do not stand by my peers if clothing leads to fights or violence at school. Safety is essential in a learning environment. Students need to feel safe in order to learn. School administrators are mainly thinking of how they can manage student safety on campus. A few administrators are on a power trip, but not most of them.

I think there also needs to be more respect between administrators and students. Administrators need to allow students to express themselves. If students would stop acting so immature and fighting with other groups, maybe administrators would allow them to wear what they wanted.

* Students say the rules cramp their style. Hurrah! Let the rules cramp their style. They look like a bunch of riffraff as it is.

I hate to say, “when I was young,” but I’m going to say it. When I was young, our best look was clean and mended clothing. And not often new. Our style was academic achievement, not a fashion statement. These “children” are in school to learn--not to compete in their outrageous look. Their aim should be academic achievement. There is no higher style than that.

They are too pampered, they have too much, and I dread to think about it, but they have the world to rule whether their minds mature or not. It is a sad, sad situation.
