Workers erect a Christmas tree at the Promenade at Westlake in Thousand Oaks as the mall sets out to launch an early start to the holiday shopping season.

Workers braved crisp winds and rain for more than six hours to plant a 55-foot white fir tree in an underground vault of soil created especially for this event, in its second year, spokeswoman Heather Duffy said.

Tree lighting--A story Tuesday incorrectly reported the date of the Christmas tree lighting at the Promenade of Westlake in Thousand Oaks. The ceremony is set for 6:30 p.m. Nov. 21.

Throughout the week, workers will trim the tree and attach about 8,000 lights, ornaments and bulbs, Duffy said.

A tree-lighting ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
