Ex-Mayor Reportedly Has Surgery in Paris

A former mayor of St. Petersburg who suffered a heart attack during official questioning about corruption underwent surgery in Paris, a news agency reported. Anatoly A. Sobchak was in satisfactory condition after heart surgery at a private clinic, the Interfax news agency quoted his wife, Lyudmila Narusova, as saying. She said Sobchak intends to return to St. Petersburg after his recovery. Sobchak, 60, is a onetime close ally of President Boris N. Yeltsin who was once seen as a contender for president. He has been under investigation for alleged wrongdoing while he was mayor from 1991 to 1996, but no charges have been filed.
