Truckload of Sand Helps Residents

Share

As dark clouds drifted overhead, Valley residents prepared for a deluge by filling sandbags Tuesday in front of Los Angeles City Councilman Hal Bernson’s district office.

The councilman had a truckload of sand dumped in the parking lot of his district office at 18917 Nordhoff St. for constituents.

Bernard Janeski, 79, shoveled sand into his trunk that he said he would use to shore up the patio of his Northridge home.

“I’m going to stack it up against my sliding door so my carpet doesn’t get wet,” said Janeski, worried that rain would seep into his living room. “This sand is a good deal. I thought I would have to go to the beach.”

Melissa Dunn, 45, of Granada Hills, packed potato sacks full of sand to keep the expected rainfall from flooding her lawn and drenching her garage.

“We get a small river when it rains,” she said. “So if we get the rain they say we’re going to get, it’s going to be very detrimental.”

All city fire stations have sandbags, but not all have sand.
