Planners to Decide if Los Rios Inn Is In

The Planning Commission is expected to decide today whether to allow a bed and breakfast inn to move into a home in the historic Los Rios District.

“A lot of people would like to have a bed and breakfast inn down here,” said John Humphreys, owner of the Ramos House Cafe next door to the proposed inn.

Humphreys said visitors come to the 220-year-old neighborhood looking for the Old Hotel California, which used to operate at the site of the proposed inn.

Although city laws allow small businesses to operate in the neighborhood, the city’s Cultural Heritage Commission in September voted against the inn proposal, 5 to 0, with Commissioner Tony Forster absent and Commissioner Bill Hardy abstaining.

Commissioners cited existing traffic congestion and a potential safety risk to pedestrians.

The four-bedroom, single-level home known as the Ignacio Soto House was built in the early 1920s and would be operated as a three-bedroom inn.
