Bid to Privatize 2 Alleys Defeated

A plan to save maintenance costs by converting two public alleyways to private ownership was narrowly defeated by city leaders after protests from property owners.

Councilman David John Shawver, on the losing end of a 3-2 vote Wednesday against the proposal, said Stanton could save “hundreds of thousands of dollars” by vacating selected alleys.

Dennis Moslenko, one of several angry property owners who spoke in opposition to the plan, said the savings would be insignificant compared with the problems a changeover could create.

“Is debris going to end up in the alley? Probably. Are [property owners] going to clean it up? No. Is crime going to get worse? Definitely,” said Moslenko, a Garden Grove resident with rental property on one of two dead-end alleys under consideration near Sentry Drive.
