Driver Caught on Foot After Freeway Chase
After sideswiping a police car in Arcadia, a hit-and-run suspect led police on a 90-minute chase along the San Bernardino Freeway on Friday before being caught in Riverside County, authorities said.
The chase began about 11:30 a.m. when police tried to stop John Howell, 25, of Arcadia, who was driving a vehicle that had allegedly been involved in a recent minor hit-and-run accident, said Sgt. Ron Buckholtz.
As police pursued Howell eastbound along the freeway, a “spike strip” laid down by California Highway Patrol officers burst the car’s tires just west of Beaumont.
Howell jumped out and jogged along a dirt road under the eye of TV helicopter cameras before he was tackled by a group of police officers.
