Renaming Airport for Jimmy Stewart

Share

With regard to the suggestion that the city rename Los Angeles International Airport in honor of the late Jimmy Stewart, let me say that I could not agree more. It is high time that we had a real name for the already too anonymous airport known as LAX.

Los Angeles is known throughout the world as the center of the film industry. To name our airport for one of its most successful and well-loved artists would be quite fitting. Stewart personified in films all that was moral and decent in America and that is also how he lived his life. Let us not forget that Jimmy volunteered to serve our country as a combat pilot throughout World War II. And he did this when he could easily have taken the safer, easier behind-the-lines jobs that were eagerly snatched up by many other Hollywood actors, lesser men than he.

After the war he continued serving as a U.S. Air Force Reserve pilot. What could possibly be more appropriate than to name our airport for one of our most famous citizens, an actor, pilot, war hero: James Stewart?

Millions of people who come through LAX from all the countries in the world have had their lives saved and crippling prevented by the development of the polio vaccine by Dr. Jonas Salk. Salk International Airport sounds great.
