No Trades Near, Taylor Indicates

General Manager Dave Taylor said Sunday the Kings are still getting calls from other teams looking to make deals, but no trades are close to being made.

“I’m not unhappy with our team,” he said a day after the Kings’ 5-1 loss to the Dallas Stars at the Forum. “I think we have 24 players who can be competitive every night. We’ve had some good games and a couple of disappointing games, but I think our effort has been there every night. That’s been encouraging.”

With new coaches named in Tampa Bay and Vancouver last week, Taylor said the Kings have been in contact with both teams.

“I don’t think that we’re close to anything, we’re really not looking for any particular deal,” Taylor said.

“Usually when a new coach comes in there’s a period of time when he wants to evaluate, and once he has made some decisions there is some possibility of moving some player. I think it’s a little too early at both of those places as far as I can tell. We’ll continue to talk with them. There may or may not be fits we think that can help our team.”

Taylor said goaltender Jamie Storr and right wing Vitali Yachmenev, both with the Long Beach Ice Dogs in the International Hockey League, are closer to returning to the Kings. Taylor said he would like to see Storr get a couple more starts, adding that Yachmenev will be called up if a forward gets injured. Center Ray Ferraro is expected to come off the injured reserve list as early as this week.

The Kings did not skate Sunday but did go through an early season fitness test at the Iceoplex. Today, they will take part in their annual golf tournament at the MountainGate Country Club in Los Angeles.
