Rebecca Clinton of Ventura, a retired journalist and teacher, died Nov. 3 at a local care center. She was 89.

Clinton was born Feb. 25, 1908, in Centerville, Iowa. She attended college in Iowa through her junior year. In her senior year, her family moved to Southern California, and she earned a bachelor’s degree and teaching credential from USC.

Clinton began teaching in Ripley, in Riverside County near the Arizona border, and later returned to USC to earn a master’s degree in journalism. From there, she moved to Santa Cruz County, where she worked for a newspaper.

She then spent 10 years in Cordova, Ala., before moving to Pensacola, Fla., to be with her daughter, C. Lynne Clinton, who was in the Navy.

Clinton took up teaching again, then followed her daughter to various Navy stations, including San Diego and Oahu, Hawaii. She settled in Ventura in 1966.

Family members said she enjoyed crochet projects, and arts and crafts. Clinton was also an avid mystery reader and could always be found with a book in her hand. She was a longtime member and past secretary of the First United Methodist Church of Ventura.

In addition to her daughter, of Ventura, Clinton is survived by a brother, Philip Wilbur Perdew; son Charles Anthony Clinton of Eugene, Ore., and two grandchildren.

A private burial will be held at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura.
