Back-to-Basics School Plan Put on Hold
Citing cost concerns, the Westminster School District Board of Trustees decided this week to table plans for opening a fundamental school, which would have offered a back-to-basics-style education and stricter discipline.
Trustees were concerned that the $1-million estimated price of reopening a closed school would be too high and could even create a budget deficit. James W. Franklin Elementary School on Hammon Lane in Huntington Beach was among the closed sites considered.
“Because of the financial report, it is not desirable for us to open any closed school at this point,” said Trish Cannady, district spokeswoman.
The possibility of converting an existing school to a fundamental format would cost much less and may be discussed in the future.
Trustees also decided against a survey that would have polled residents on how they feel about concepts behind fundamental schools.
