How a Father and Son Inspired Others
One thing became readily apparent in the interview with Tony Hawk (“A Soaring Hawk,” by John M. Glionna, Oct. 5), and that is that parental support led all the Hawk children to be exceptional.
I skateboarded in competitions and got to know Frank Hawk personally. We often didn’t see eye to eye on issues involving the world of skateboarding, but what I did see was someone there not only for his son but for the other kids as well.
At age 32 I still skate as much as I can and try to support as many young skateboarders as possible. The role model I always use is Tony Hawk.

I am a skateboarder, and to have Tony Hawk on the cover of your magazine had a big influence on me. Skateboarding has come so far. But people still think it is a crime because it does not get enough good publicity. It is a very difficult sport and requires tons of practice and effort. Thanks for helping people to understand that.
