Suspected Robber Shot by Police After Chase

A man suspected of committing an armed robbery was shot and killed Monday afternoon by Torrance police officers who chased the alleged gunman and fired at him after he got out of his car.

Officers said Dean Dial, 33, of Gardena, pointed a loaded handgun at them before they fired.

The incident began around noon after a man reported he had been robbed in the parking lot of Shoe City on Hawthorne Boulevard. Police said that Dial fled in his car but was pursued by the victim who called police on his cellular phone.

Officers said they chased Dial until he stopped in the 1600 block of Casmir Avenue. When Dial allegedly pointed the handgun, officers shot him in the upper torso, authorities said. Dial was treated by Torrance fire paramedics and transported to Harbor/UCLA Medical Center where he died at 3:10 p.m., authorities said. Police were investigating the robbery and the shooting.
