Bolsa Grande. 10-17, 4-8 in 1996-97. Coach: Michael Anderson (second year, 10-16). Guard Duc Nguyen (20.5 points) was fourth in the county in scoring last season. Guard Michael Bui, a 5-10 senior, forward Ryan Pham, a 5-11 senior, and center Doug Baughman, the 6-2 junior quarterback on the football team, also return. Sophomore Jon James, a 6-3 center, will get a starting role, according to Anderson. Others are Alonso Campos, a 5-8 senior guard, Llamar Holloway, a 6-foot senior forward, David Ly, a 5-10 junior post, John Nguyen, a 5-11 junior guard, Kevin Pham, a 5-11 sophomore guard, and Huy Tran, a 5-7 senior guard.

Garden Grove. 11-16, 7-5 in 1996-97. Coach: Dewey Van Cleave (13th year, 150-141). Van Cleave calls it a “building year.” Roland Quach, a 5-10 junior point guard who averaged 11 points and seven assists, is returning. Also back is 6-1 senior Justin Clarkson. Expected to battle for starting roles are 6-5 center Mike Anderson, 5-9 guard Jerry Coleman, 6-1 forward Miguel Medina and 6-2 forward Jim Monsoor.

La Quinta. 18-9, 10-2 in 1996-97. Coach: Craig Snider (third year, 34-18). The Aztecs are expected to give Pacifica a run for the league title. There are two 6-4 junior forwards, all-leaguer Ben Fredrickson and reserve Chris Smith. Nam Truong, a 5-8 junior, leads a bevy of speedy guards that includes sixth man Riorello Ramos, a 6-0 senior, Matt Blanchard, a 5-9 sophomore transfer from Pacifica, and William Chau, a 5-8 junior. At forward there’s Amir Bonja, a 5-11 senior, and Ming Li, a 5-11 junior.

Los Amigos. 13-13, 7-5 in 1996-97. Coach: Don Grable (fifth year, 50-53). The Lobos have 6-5 center John Valenzuela and 6-4 forward Gabriel Sagrero, the only seniors on the roster. Sagrero has had recurring back problems. Newcomers include Alvaro Arcos, a 5-10 junior guard, Jesse Carrillo, a 6-6 junior center, Isaac Hurtado, a 6-1 junior swingman, and Carlos Sanchez, a 5-11 junior guard. Andrew Niumata, a 6-0 junior guard, Anthony Faletoi, a 5-10 junior guard, and Alex Bedolla, a 5-8 senior guard, are expected to join the team when the football season ends.

Pacifica. 16-12, 9-3 in 1996-97. Coach: Bob Becker (fifth year, 84-32). Despite having only Jeff Swan, a 5-9 senior guard, returning, the Mariners are the coaches’ favorite to win the league title. Other players with good opportunities are Danny Dihn, a 5-7 junior guard, Jeff Davidson, a 5-9 senior point guard, Bryan Wislocki, a 6-7 senior center, and Adam Rachlin, a 5-10 junior forward. Eight others, the tallest of whom is Patrick Douglass, a 6-3 junior center, are on the team.

Rancho Alamitos. 1-24, 1-11 in 1996-97. Coach: Dave Kirksey (first year). There are no returning starters, but Kirksey says he has a hard-working group. Three senior reserves figure to have the inside track on starting jobs: 6-2 forward Henry Huisan, 5-3 guard Thai Nguyen and 6-0 forward Mike Reilley. Also expected to see playing time are 6-3 junior forward/center Hugo Soriano, 6-2 junior forward Brad Steen and 5-5 senior guard Rod Victoria.

Santiago. 8-15, 4-8 in 1996-97. Coach: Mike DaDeppo (second year, 8-15). Becker of Pacifica calls the Cavaliers the “most improved team in the league.” DaDeppo counters that he has only two returning starters: 6-2 junior swingman Jose Lizarraras and 5-11 senior guard Aris Lindo. Lizarraras, an all-league selection, averaged 11 points and six rebounds. Lindo averaged 10 points and five rebounds. Others expected to contribute are 5-11 senior swingman Jorge Brito, 6-0 junior Khemara Krouch and 6-3 senior forward/center Ben Tran.
