NOTES : He Skated Softly With No Big Stick

Steve McKenna, the Kings’ 6-foot-8 forward, was involved in a bizarre play in the third period of the team’s 2-2 tie at St. Louis on Thursday.

While battling Al MacInnis in the St. Louis zone, McKenna broke MacInnis’ stick in half with a slash but before he could take advantage, McKenna had his stick taken away by MacInnis, who should have been called for holding an opponent’s stick. But referee Lance Roberts said that he didn’t see it.

“He just grabbed my stick. . . . I was just skating away and he just yanked it out of my hand,” McKenna said. “The linesman even admitted to seeing it.”

Throughout the season, the Kings have ranked among the most penalized teams in the NHL in averaging nearly 22 minutes a game in penalties.

On Thursday, a King penalty led to the Blues’ first goal when center Pierre Turgeon, in his first game since suffering a broken right forearm on Oct. 4 against Dallas, scored to give St. Louis a first-period lead.
