SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

It didn’t take long for visiting Beverly Hills High to establish itself against La Canada in the Southern Section Division IX quarterfinals Friday night.

All it took was a 78-yard pass from Beverly Hills quarterback Adam Kennybrew to wide receiver Ron Monteilh on their first play from scrimmage.

The game only got worse for La Canada (7-5), which saw its playoff run come to an end in a lopsided 44-0 loss to the Normans (9-3).

How lopsided was it?

Well, it will go down as the worst playoff defeat in La Canada history and the largest victory margin for Bevery Hills in its 71-year history.

It eclipsed last season, when Beverly Hills posted a 38-6 victory over La Canada in the first round of the playoffs.

“We figured we could play with them if we played our kind of ball, but they just blew us off the line,” La Canada Coach Rich Wheeler said. “They were consistently beating us off the ball and you can’t win football games like that.”

It was no wonder that the Normans out gained La Canada 534 yards to 118.

Leading the way for the Normans was highly-recruited quarterback Adam Kennybrew, who completed 11 of 22 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown. He added 76 yards rushing and a touchdown..

Kennybrew said it was the team’s balance, 302 yards rushing and 232 passing, that made it a long night for La Canada.

“No team can stop you if you do that,” Kennybrew said. “We set them up to show them different things and we did what we wanted to do.”
