Board All Wet on Bolsa Chica Plan

Share

* Even if the Orange County Board of Supervisors is provided with the right information and facts, they quickly ignore the wishes of the people and readily jump in bed with the greedy and destructive developers, such as Koll Real Estate Group (“Scaled-Down Bolsa Chica Plan Approved,” Nov. 19).

Supervisor Jim Silva should be very ashamed of himself, in view of the fact that he was voted in on an environmental ticket.

The supervisors had all of the information they needed to save the last, beautiful wilderness area left, but no. The latest attack on our Orange County chief executive officer is just another “good ol’ boy” plot to discredit a hard-working woman who has to supervise a bunch of “bad ol’ boys.”

* Bolsa Chica is not a done deal. The fat lady hasn’t sung yet!

The communities of Orange County have many opportunities to find a buyer for the mesa, and Koll wants the money. So there is our long-sought win-win situation.

After the supervisors’ vote on Nov. 18, Sen. Barbara Boxer got language in an appropriations bill which President Clinton signed that says within 90 days the Fish and Wildlife Service will report if there is a willing seller, the cost of appraisal, estimated cost of acquisition and opportunities of public-private partnerships.

The Bolsa Chica Land Trust has two lawsuits and one appeal in the works. The land trust visited each supervisor. The chairman, Supervisor William Steiner, wouldn’t even give us a meeting, “because Bolsa Chica isn’t in [my] district.”

The Bolsa Chica is a county and state treasure, and everyone should be on the hunt for money to buy the mesa and save it as open space for generations to come. Let’s all pull together and save this jewel from destruction.
