Caltrans to Shore Up Unstable Portion of Bluff
In an effort to prevent landslides along Pacific Coast Highway, Caltrans began excavation Tuesday of an unstable portion of a bluff overlooking the roadway.
The 53,000 cubic yards of soil to be removed will be used by the city of Malibu to help reconstruct Kanan Dume Road, said Caltrans spokeswoman Margie Tiritilli.
Officials closed Kanan Dume Road to traffic in September 1996 after a landslide.
Fragments of the foundations of the two houses that formerly occupied the 15000 block of Corona del Mar Drive also were hauled out. Caltrans purchased the homes for $5 million earlier this year and demolished them, Tiritilli said.
“We want to prevent any future landslide,” she said. “Pacific Coast Highway is the main route in the area and we need to keep it clear.”
Completion of the $1-million project includes construction of a storm drain system and landscaping the graded hillside to deter erosion.
