Gun Violence Program Gets Help From Computer Store

A Monrovia police program that pays tipsters for information leading to the seizure of illegal firearms got a boost this week when a local computer store offered a free training class to anyone who donates $100 or more to the city’s Stop Gun Violence Bounty program.

The CompUSA computer course usually costs $175, but the offer for free classes in exchange for the donation extends through October, said Monrovia Police Sgt. Steve Coffield.

Since it went into effect in February, the program has helped police confiscate five guns from convicted criminals, most recently last weekend, Coffield said.

“We are confident that we have prevented potentially serious crimes from occurring because of the seizure of these weapons, and we believe help from companies like CompUSA will continue to make this program flourish,” Mayor Robert Bartlett said.

So far, $3,200 has been donated to the reward fund with $300 coming from firefighters and $300 from police officers.
